Instructional leadership is a significant parting from the ancient model of administrator as authoritarian. Inherent in the concept is the idea that learning should be a top-down process. If those in charge of the learners are excited about learning, then they will share their enthusiasm throughout the community.

These leaders also attempt to sustain improvement and change in their schools by anticipating and overcoming the obstacles that inevitably will emerge along the way.

Those who learn to be instructional leaders obtain many features that are beneficial to their communities. Instructional leaders exhibit a clear sense of direction for their communities and prioritize and focus attention on the things that really matter in terms of the work of students.

Instructional leadership requires involvement of the leader as well as the staff members in the process of decision making and implementation. While the hierarchical structure remains the same, it is the involvement of every member in the decision-making process that makes it different from the other leadership styles in education.

Visionary leadership plays an important role when it comes to instructional leadership. Involvement of the group being instructed at all levels is essential, so that the vision is effectively executed. Ultimately, it is the teachers who have to do so, thus involving them at the stages of planning itself are necessary.
