Forgive One Another; In the Old Testament

Those who forgave one another In The Old Testament had in mind the unconditional love of God.  The Lord taught many times in the Old Testament to his people to forgive one another. He demonstrated forgiveness in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve sinned against him.  At a time when Adam and Eve had become sinners, the Lord promised the offspring of the woman who would crush the Devil’s head.   The blood sacrifice the Lord instructed Israelites to be offering was a sign on how he was forgiving them.  The Scriptures say that without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sin. Business Training in Kenya has more articles on the same or related topics.

Having shown to Adam and Eve the way through which all human beings were to receive forgiveness, he commanded them to forgive one another.   In Genesis3:21, the Lord covered them with garments of Skin.  This was a fore shadow of the messiah who was to come to shed all his blood for the forgiveness of the sins of all who believe in him.

Forgive one another In the Old Testament through Cities of refuge

Refer to Numbers 35:6, and see how God ordered Israelites to forgive one another through Cities of refuge.  “Six of the towns you give the Levites will be cities of refuge, to which a person who killed some one may flee.”

When accidentally, you happened to kill some one, in the Old Testament, relatives and friends of the killed person would naturally be filled with bitterness and thoughts of revenge.  In that kind of atmosphere, it was not practical to immediately forgive one another.   For this reason the offender was supposed to flee to the city of refuge and stay there until the range of the offended community subsided.   It is at that time they would forgive one another.

Escaping to the cities of refuge has a significance of Christ.  Whatever mistake you make, run to Christ.  He will intercede for you and even touch the offended person’s heart creating an environment in which you can forgive one another. 1John1:2 say, “My dear children, I write this to you that you will not sin, but.  But if any one does sin, we have one person who speaks to the father in our defense who is Jesus Christ, the righteous one.

Forgive One Another; In the Old TestamentForgive one another in the Old Testament bearing in mind the Sovereignty of God

Joseph was hated by his brothers.  They sold him to Egypt as a slave.   There he was accused falsely by Potiphar’s wife and was taken to Jail.  Joseph forgave all those who wronged him.  When his brothers later came to Egypt to buy  grain and found out that   it was Joseph who was in charge of the selling of the grain,  they forgave one another for Joseph did not hold any grudge against them.  Genesis 45: Joseph told his brothers, “Do not be distressed and do not be angry with your selves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God send me ahead of you.”

Forgive one another knowing that the Lord orders every thing as In the Old Testament

In 2 Samuel16:5-10, King David was running away when his son Absalom had conspired against him.  Shemei son of Gera cursed David.  His body guards wanted to kill Shemei but David refused them to do that, believing that the Lord could have told Shemei to curse him.  David forgave not only Shemei who cursed him but also his son Absalon and His father in law, King Saul who tried many times to kill David. Even if it were you and me living in the Old Testament, we would forgive one another if only we embraced God’s model of forgiveness realizing that he control every one and every thing.  With the above said, let us forgive one another  as seen In the Old Testament.
