Communication Models

Communication models are  symbolic representations of a forms of communication. Communication models mainly help to show how information or a message flows from the sender to the receiver. There are various models of communication. Business Training in Kenya has more articles.

Types of Communication Models

Shannon and Weaver Model of Communication

It is a model in which the information moves from the sender through a medium to the receiver. The information is then received and a feedback given to the sender. It is majorly used in face to face communication.

Linear Communication Model

The linear communication model is whereby the information comes straight from the source to the receiver or also from the receiver to the source to complete the communication process

Interactional Model of Communication

In the interactional communication model there is the sender, message, coding and the receiver.  The sender needs to have good communication skills, knowledge and understand culture around which he is sending his message. The content, elements and structure of the message must be understood by the sender in the coding process by the receiver.

Berlo’s Model of Communication

It was invented by Berlo. In this model of communication, the information comes from the source, through a channel to the receivers who then send back the relevant feedback.

Communication Models

It was the first major model of communication. In light of the weaknesses of the SMCR and transmission models, Barnlund proposed a transactional model of communication in 2008. The basic premise of the transactional model of communication is that individuals are simultaneously engaging in the sending and receiving of messages.

It was invented in 1949 by Claude Shannon and Warren. It is a mirror of the telephone and radio function technologies.  Their initial model of communication consisted of three primary parts: sender, channel, and receiver. The sender was the part of a telephone into which a person speaks, the channel was the telephone itself, and the receiver was the part of the phone where one could hear the other person, the receiving end. Shannon and Weaver also recognized that often there is static that interferes with one listening to a telephone conversation, which they deemed noise. This was their complete model.

Transmission model

It is also known as the standard view model of communication. Here, information is sent in some form sender to a receiver. This common conception of communication simply views communication as a means of sending and receiving information. The strengths of this model are generality. simplicity,  and quantifiability.  It was also invented by Shannon and Weaver. It had some problems though like technicality problems, semantic problems and effectiveness

SMCR Model of Communication.

It was developed in 1960 by David Berlo. He expanded on Shannon and Weaver’s linear model of Communication and created the Sender-Message-Channel-Receiver Model of communication separated the model into clear parts and has been expanded upon by other scholars.

Conclusion on Communication Models

There are various models of communicationand one only needs to pick on the one that best suits him or his use. One can as well come up with a model that he thinks is workable. Communication Models are hereby analysed.
